I had a request for more noticings, so I’m starting back up again. Caught this outside the dorm room of some freshmen. Roll outs are a college tradition whereby, upon making it into a student group (sororities, capella groups, etc.) the entire team comes to the new member’s dorm to inform them… usually at some point before 6 in the morning. These girls stated their non-preference for roll outs… on the leftover packaging of a kitchen knife.

Planes & Art

I caught these shots of some hobbyists’ airplanes I noticed the other day. They’re both exceedingly beautiful, and they got me thinking about the way in which our hobbies turn us into creatives, even if we don’t consider ourselves artists. In what ways do we find space to express ourselves in seemingly mundane spaces?

I noticed this little post-it note taped on the door frame of a door - a short cut for a common action.

Noticing: I guess the label must have been coming off, so they decided to tape it back on…
I shot this picture, by the way, at the gas station, which I coasted and stuttered down to from my house this morning. I really ought to learn to stop putting off filling my gas tank. In the mean time, it’s the weirdest thing to have a hybrid in that state - the electric engine runs fine, but when the gas engine runs, it’s pretty scary. So you stutter between the two engines…

I noticed a playful way to say what every cup of coffee absolutely has to say anyways: “Our competitors use this part of the cup to tell you that what’s inside is “EXTREMELY HOT.” We figure since you were smart enough to come to us, you probably already knew that.”

For those of you who don’t know, I’ve been interning at Ideo. Across from where I sit I keep noticing a lone finger-blaster that’s been abandoned on that little beam in the wall.

Here’s a little impromptu/self-constructed paper towel dispenser I noticed in the back of the taxi cab. Apparently all the taxicabs in this fellow’s company are required to carry a roll of paper towels for that inevitable paper-towel-requiring moment.

Here’s a really complete rainbow I noticed in Lake Oswego, OR. Yep, that’s the real deal.

Noticings: From Portland’s Mint. The bar was excellent, by the way. Very mellow, classy and some great drinks. What really caught my eyes was these sugared martini glasses - instead of just being rimmed with sugar, they glazed the sugar on. It was classy. And delicious.

Noticings: So, if you hang out around here at all, you’re probably aware that I’m a skier. Last weekend (last weekend? Sorry, this is an old photo), I was walking along in Stanford, when this sticker caught my eye. I have about the strongest “ski sense” known to mankind, so I took five steps backward and realized I had, indeed, seen the Atomic logo on a sticker in Stanford, California in the middle of October. Little things like that make me happy, and this time of year I tend to go the craziest. I can’t wait to ski.
* PS, congratulations to Ted Ligety in Solden this week (:
